When is the Analogue Switch-off (ASO)

Stephen asks;

I have been told that from May 2012, analogue will be switched off. I currently have an Aerial for Irish channels only and Satellite Receiver for other channels. Do I need a new box because of this for the Irish channels? I have also been told that for other UK channels, I would need another box for them also.

Our answer;

you have been misinformed at least to a certain extent. The existing analogue system will not be turned off until towards the end of 2012 (Oct 24th 2012 to be precise). This is an EU wide change from Analogue to Digital. You will hear more about this in the coming months. It will be called either the Analogue switch off (ASO) or the Digital switch over (DSO). So from that point of view you won't need a new box immediately but will in the long run.

Will you need a new Aerial ?

It depends but most like not. If you have wide band UHF aerial on your house currently it will most likely do for the new system for 2 reasons:
  • The new Digital Terrestrial TV (Saorview) system will also use UHF TV aerials identical to the one use for analogue
  • The new Saorview signal is in general much stronger than the old analogue system

Which is my nearest Transmistter so I can check what I need ?

Go to the Saorview Transmitter Map

Will I need a new Box ?

You will need one of the following;

  • A Saorview approved (or at a minimum an MPEG4 HD) TV which can handle the Saorview transmissions
  • A Saorview approved receiver (or at a minimum an MPEG4 HD) receiver to work with your existing TV
