What Size Satellite Dish Do I Need?

In this page I go through the key steps in choosing the correct satellite dish for your desired satellite from your location. By following these steps you can verify that the chosen satellite will give you the desired channels, know what size of dish to buy and also know what angle of elevation and direction you should set the satellite dish to.
This is particularly useful for;
  • People trying to pick up a non astra 2 satellite in Ireland
  • Astra 2 or any other satellite when outside Ireland
  • Please note that in Ireland a 60cm dish is all you'll need for Sky or the UK Freesat channels
    • You can find the Sky / Freesat dish setup here
Part 1: Which satellite?
go to
  • lyngsat.com
  • Satellite - Europe 73°E-0°E
  • Select lyngsat.com/Eutelsat-28A-and-Astra-1N-2A-2B.html
  • With the main channels now all being found on Astra 1N @ 28 degrees East

Part 2: How big a dish do I need?

go to
  • Google "Lyngsat Map" & the satellite you are looking for e.g. "Lyngsat Map Astra 1N"
  • lyngsat-maps.com/Astra-1N.html
  • Note: If there is a range of maps / beams - pick the map which is relevant to you
  • Read this contour map to get the size of dish you will need for your location
Part 3 Where to point your dish?
  • dishpointer.com
    • Choose location: Nice, South of France
    • Satellite: 28 degrees East - Astra 2A/B/D
    • See the angle / elevation you must set your dish to, for example;
      • Elevation: 35.4°
      • Azimuth (magn.): 149.7°
