What is the difference between Saorview and Sky TV
Mick asks;
I seen them new saorview channels advertised on TV last night. Is this Saorview thing a replacement for Sky TV? Is it some alternative? Basically, what's the difference between sky and saorview.
Our answer;
Mick, basically they are two different things altogether.
- Sky is a satellite TV system
- Saorview is a Digital Terrestrial TV system (from a transmitter on a hill or mountain usually)
- Sky boxes in Ireland have many channels on them, including the standard Irish channels
- Saorview will only have the standard Irish channels + a few more that are specifically for Saorview
- You have to pay for sky
- Once you buy your saorview box, you do not pay any monthly fees from then on.
- You need a TV license for both
- Sky (if you pay extra for it) has many HD channels
- Saorview has a few HD channels
- You need a satellite dish to get Sky
- You need an aerial to get Saorview
They are just a few of the differences. There are lots of boring facts about both also but the above is the nuts and bolts of it. Hope that helps.
