How to Install a UHF & VHF/DAB/FM Diplexer

Summary: A UHF & VHF/DAB/FM diplexer is used to combine the output from 2 aerials i.e. a VHF/DAB/FM and a UHF aerial into a single satellite cable that can then be distributed. There are various types of diplexers but they all have the same basic format of 2 cables in and 1 cable out.

Tools Needed

  • Snips
  • Screwdriver

Equipment Needed

  • VHF/DAB/FM aerial (qty: 1)
  • UHF aerial (qty: 1)
  • Diplexer e.g. Fringe VHF/UHF/DAB/FM Diplexer (qty: 1)
  • Satellite cable

Procedure

  1. Take an assembled UHF and an assembled VHF / FM radio aerial / DAB radio aerial
  2. Cut the satellite cable coming from each aerial so that it is long enough to allow the aerials to be mounted on a pole without the aerials touching each other and be fed into the bottom of the diplixer which should be mounted below the 2 aerials. Estimated length is .6m - 1.2m
  3. Pare down the end of each of the aerial cables and the output cable
  4. Squeeze on the clips on the outside of the diplexer and clip off the cover
  5. Insert the satellite cable from the VHF/FM/DAB aerial into the corresponding hole on the base of the diplexer
  6. Use the screwdriver to tighten both the core and earth wire into their respective screw and saddle & clamp locking mechanisms
  7. Repeat the procedure for both the UHF and output cables
  8. Leave the output cable long enough to reach the RG6 cables that are feeding into the various TV points in the house
