Do I need a Landline or Phone Line for Sky Digital Multiroom
Majella asks;
Do I need a Landline Phoneline for Sky Digital Multiroom?
Our answer;
You do need some form of landline whether it is a traditional phone line like from Eircom or Vonafone for example or nowadays becoming more common is the type of 'pseudo' landline that you get with the likes of UPC. All will work well but the basic fact remains that you do need the landline.
Basically The reason for this is that you are paying far less for the 2nd and third room for your subscription so how are Sky to know that you aren't just giving the card to someone else to get their Sky TV cheaply? Well, cleverly, Sky have built in software to their boxes that 'phone home' periodically to make sure that the Sky box is still at the same address. If you move the card to a different address with a different phone number, it will know and not work.
That's basically the reason. It's basically a revenue protection reason.
The problem with it is that you have to run a phone line to every sky box if you have Sky multi room and this can be a hassle. Some people do opt to go for the wired approach and choose to buy some Phone Cable and Phone Connectors but you would need an RJ11 Crimp Tool for this also. This method is favoured by installers.
The option that ordinary folks like yourself favour tends to be the Wireless Phone Extenders. They allow your phone line signal to be transmitted wirelessly through you home without the need for additional wiring.
