Do I need a Card to get Digital Terrestrial TV (DTT) in Ireland
Frank asks;
I heard that I need to buy a special Card to receiver Digital Terrestrial Television in Ireland?
Our answer;
Hi Frank, what you head is not true at all. To get the Irish Digital TV stations, you do not need a card at all. Currently you can get 6 channels on the Saorview platform.
RTE1, RTE2 (SD & HD), TV3, TG4, 3e and RTE News Now
These Digital Terrestrial TV (DTT) Channels are broadcast Free to Air so there is definitely no need for a card for pay TV.
As times goes on however, there hopefully will be more Digital TV channels added to Saorview Set Top Boxes and in that case some of them may be pay TV and may require a special subscription card to make them work. But that is a long way off I'd imagine, so for now and the foreseeable future, you will not need a card and in fact, you will never need one for the Irish domestic channels as they currently stand as these legally have to be broadcast free to air.
To get Irish Digital TV you will need the correct UHF TV Aerial and either a Saorview Compatible Digital Receiver or a Saorview approves Receiver. Once you have them installed and up and running, you will have to pay no more TV bills(except the TV license of course), as long as you don't want to upgrade to pay TV stations if they become available.
The other option is to get a Satellite Combo Receiver which you can get the Free Irish & UK TV channels on.
