Can You Explain A Little About Freesat
Tom asks,
I want to move away from my subscription TV services and am torn between free to air and Freesat. I am leaning towards the latter though. Could you explain a bit about Freesat for me please?
Our answer;
What is Freesat?
Freesat is a satellite TV service, set up and run by the BBC and ITV.
How much does Freesat cost?
To get freesat, there is a one-off payment for a freesat receiver or a Freesat approved TV (if you can manage to lay your hand on one in Ireland). You will also need a satellite dish and cabling. The good news is that if you are cancelling your sky subscription, then you can use the existing dish and cables. The should be no need to re-align your satellite dish. There is no subscription and no contract.
What equipment do I need to get Freesat?
As mentioned above, you will need a freesat box, satellite dish and cabling. To watch TV in HD you will need a freesat HD receiver connected to an HD Ready TV or a TV with freesat HD built in. If you want to avail of services like the series link on freesat, you will need to buy a Freesat+ receiver.
How is freesat installed?
If you have a working satellite dish on your home you may be able to perform a DIY install. If not, freesat can be installed by a satellite installer.
How many channels will I get on Freesat?
Over 115 TV channels including entertainment, movies, news, lifestyle, BBC iplayer, and subscription-free HD from the BBC and ITV & C4 (April 2011).
